The Knuckles Mountain Range is in the Matale and Kandy districts in central Sri Lanka. The range’s name comes from the recumbent folds in the western part of the massif that resemble the knuckles on a clenched hand when viewed at certain Kandy district locations. The name Dumbara Kanduvetiya, meaning misty mountain range, was given by British surveyors in the early 1900s. However, Sinhalese locals have always called the area Dumbara Kanduvetiya. The Knuckles Mountain Forest Range, covering approximately 21,000 ha, is part of the Central Highlands World Heritage site. It was declared in 2010. Although it is part of Central Highlands, it is separated from it by the Mahaweli River Valley on the south and east sides and the Matale Valley on the west. This Knuckles Mountains Hiking and Trekking Day Tour from Kandy allows you to witness this beautiful heritage site.
